Corvette Gets Electrification and AWD For Its 70th Birthday
Exactly 70 years after the debut of the first 1953 Corvette at Motorama in New York City, Chevrolet returned to New York City to announce details of the new 2024 Corvette E-Ray. Being the first Corvette equipped with either electrical assist or All-Wheel Drive, the E-Ray will be an iconic step for Chevrolet. At Chevrolet of Spring Valley, we are excited to share with you the upcoming details.
Quickest Production ‘Vette Ever
The E-Ray is the quickest vehicle in Corvette history production, with a recorded 0-60 mph of 2.5 seconds.1 It is also an actual “10-second car” completing the quarter mile in 10.5 seconds.1 While power comes primarily from the 6.2L LT2 Small Block V-8 pushing 495 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels, those quick times couldn’t happen without both the start-from-stop acceleration and increased traction of the 160 hp and 125 lb-ft motor between the front wheels.
“Corvette has been a halo for Chevrolet since 1953,” said Scott Bell, vice president of Chevrolet. “E-Ray’s unprecedented blend of confidence, luxury performance, sophistication, and style provides a new reason for more people to experience Corvette.”
AWD Corvette for Any Weather
Of course, the E-Ray is no mere drag racer. Its intelligent eAWD system constantly reads the road surface, seamlessly applying additional power to the front wheels as needed, to enhance vehicle stability. This applies to both spirited driving and low traction conditions. Electric assist is also adjusted according to E-Ray’s six driver-selectable modes: Tour, Sport, Track, Weather, My Mode, and Z-Mode. Magnetic Ride Control 4.0 is standard with three distinct suspension settings. The normally optional Ceramic Carbon brake system will be standard on all E-Ray models.
“Corvettes must provide an exhilarating driving experience on backroads and tracks, and E-Ray nails it,” said Tadge Juechter, executive chief engineer, Corvette. “The electrification technology enhances the feeling of control in all conditions, adding an unexpected degree of composure.”
The 1.9 kWh battery pack needs no plugging in as it receives its charge from regenerative braking and coasting, as well as excess power from the engine during cruising. Drivers can select a Charge+ mode to keep the battery sufficiently charged during extended hot-lapping on a track. In contrast, when the owner wants to drive quietly in and out of their neighborhood, there is a silent electric-only Stealth Mode.
Exclusive Electrifying Design Details
At first glance, the E-Ray could be mistaken for a Sting-Ray and a second glance will reveal the differences. To start, the body is widened to accommodate the E-Ray’s 3-inch wider stance. The staggered 20” and 21” wheels have an exclusive twisted 5-spoke star design with four available aluminum finishes. The E-Ray will have an available bespoke body-length stripe package for some of its 14 exterior colors, which include the all-new Riptide Blue, Seawolf Gray, and Cacti. Other E-Ray design elements include:
- Standard carbon flash badging
- Available black exhaust tips and bright badging
- Available carbon fiber ground effects
- Optional carbon fiber wheels in carbon flash, visible carbon fiber finish, or visible carbon fiber with a red stripe
Inside, the E-Ray introduces an all-new Artemis Dipped interior, featuring complementary deep green tones on nearly every interior surface. Overall, there are seven interior color choices and three seat packages.
You will also find an exclusive performance app on the infotainment system, which provides the driver with graphic displays of how the propulsion system is operating in real-time. There are three primary display layouts:
- Gauges (displays dynamic power output from the motor and V-8 engine)
- Dyno (provides a graph of power/torque across selectable time intervals)
- Data (showcases electrical system performance and efficiency).
Coming Soon to Spring Valley Chevy
As with all Corvettes, the E-Ray will be built in the Bowling Green, Kentucky assembly plant. Anticipated to go on sale later in 2023 as a 2024 model with an MSRP of $104,2952 for the 1LZ coupe and $111,2952 for the 1LZ convertible.
