GM To Join Tesla Charging Network
Chevrolet of Spring Valley is happy to inform you that General Motors has announced a plan to integrate the North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector design into its EVs beginning in 2025. This will enable drivers of vehicles on the GM Ultium platform to access Tesla Charging stations throughout North America. Currently, Tesla has over 12,000 superchargers in key locations across the continent, and the number is constantly increasing. This agreement complements GM’s own ongoing investments in charging networks and builds on the more than 134,000 chargers currently available to GM EV drivers through the company’s Ultium Charge 360 initiative.
“Our vision of the all-electric future means producing millions of world-class EVs across categories and price points while creating an ecosystem that will accelerate mass EV adoption,” said GM Chair and CEO Mary Barra. “This collaboration is a key part of our strategy and an important next step in quickly expanding access to fast chargers for our customers. Not only will it help make the transition to electric vehicles more seamless for our customers, but it could help move the industry toward a single North American charging standard.”
Ultium EV Owners to access both current and Tesla Charging Systems
Starting in 2024, the Tesla Supercharger Network will be accessible to GM EV drivers through the use of an adapter. Beginning in 2025, GM EVs will be built with a NACS inlet allowing direct access to Tesla Superchargers without an adapter. GM subsequently plans to make adapters available for drivers of 2025 and after vehicles to enable charging on existing CCS-capable fast-charge stations.
The Tesla Supercharger Network will also be integrated into GM EV vehicles and mobile apps to help drivers locate and pay for charging at Tesla Superchargers as easily as they do at the existing charging network. This will complement the charging experience at the growing Ultium Charge 360 Network of charging stations, as well as additional charging stations GM makes available through existing integrations with other charging networks.
Rebecca Tinucci, Tesla’s Senior Director of Charging Infrastructure, added, “Our mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy. Giving every EV owner access to ubiquitous and reliable charging is a cornerstone of that mission. We’re excited to work with other industry leaders like General Motors to provide access to the Tesla Supercharger Network via the North American Charging Standard.”
More Partnerships for more Charging Stations
As part of its Ultium Charge 360 initiative, GM will continue to develop programs to expand both home and public charging capability. This includes collaborations with Pilot Company, owner of Pilot, and Flying J travel stops found throughout major travel corridors. Together with another partnership with the EVgo charging network, this will add more than 5,000 DC fast chargers to the nearly 13,000 existing DC fast chargers in North America.
All this adds up to making GM’s Ultium-based EVs more useful to American consumers than ever and hopefully making “range anxiety” a quaint short-lived term. The Ultium platform is the basis for the Cadillac Lyriq SUV, and Hummer EVs as well as the upcoming Cadillac Celestiq and EV versions of the Silverado, Blazer, and Equinox.
