General Motors Teams Up to Deliver More Charging Stations to U.S. Drivers
How North America is Expanding the Electric Car Charging Network
As the benefits of electric car driving become more and more popular, more and more electric vehicles are also starting to show up on the market in some form. Some of these are purely electric models, while others might be hybrids or plug-in hybrids, the latter of which allow for fully electric driving for short distances.
Whether driving a fully electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid, however, you will want easy access to a charging port regardless. The only problem is that not everyone has great access to charging stations. Ideally, any owner of an electric car would have an at-home charger installed in their garage. But even with a charger at home, easy access to public charging stations for longer trips is necessary.
Some areas of the United States (and North America as a whole) have plenty of public charging available. Some areas, however, are lacking when it comes to charging access. That’s why a team of seven automakers, including General Motors, are working to expand the charging network in North America by 30,000 charging stations.
Car Charging Efforts From GM and Other Automakers
These charging stations will be high-powered units that will provide easy access to vehicle charging along urban and highway locations. These stations won’t be limited to bare-bones features either. These charging stations will use reliable systems and feature digital integration, amenities like food service and retail stores, restrooms and canopies.
Down the road, the expectation is that drivers will be able to use smartphone apps or built-in vehicle apps to communicate with charging stations as well. This will allow them to reserve spots, plan routes based on charging station locations and make payments digitally.
It is estimated that 182,000 DC fast chargers will be needed to support electric vehicle charging demands by 2030, so there is a definite need for this initiative. By 2030, it is estimated that more than half of all U.S. car sales will be electric vehicles. Gasoline powered models may dominate now, but it is clear that things are changing quickly. Highly traveled routes will be the first to receive these new charging stations, but more rural locations will see development in the future as well.
