OnStar Expands Member Services and Launches New App

For nearly 3 decades, OnStar has been a mainstay in GM vehicles, providing owners the ability to unlock their cars when their keys are stuck inside, get emergency roadside assistance, get first responders to the scene of an accident, and in the case of Senator Bob Corker, track down their daughter’s stolen vehicle and disable it so the police can recover the vehicle for them. 

Since being that little blue button near your rearview mirror, OnStar has offered more services to more customers, including motorcycle riders and in your home. “We believe that everyone, everywhere deserves to feel safe. That’s why we keep innovating to bring that feeling to more people in more places than ever before,” said Mike Devereux, vice president of OnStar Safety and Connectivity.

The brand new OnStar Guardian app now offers motorcyclists the ability to get roadside assistance and emergency services. When using the app, you can give permission to let OnStar detect via smartphone sensors when you are moving, either by car or motorcycle, and be able to tell if a rapid amount of deceleration occurs, possibly signaling a crash. In the event of an accident, an assistant can contact 911 and tell them the situation and where you are to get you emergency assistance as quickly as possible. The new app can also help with getting you a tow, a battery jump, or some gas. The same Guardian app can also help you even when you’re not in or on a vehicle. If you say, “Alexa, call for help,” you will be connected to an OnStar emergency assistant who will get you the help you need. 

OnStar can now provide you with vehicle insurance, too. Started in 2020, the insurance was made to be affordable for all drivers, and by giving OnStar permission, they can monitor your driving habits to help provide you with good driving discounts. You don’t need to have an OnStar emergency services subscription to qualify for this auto insurance.
