Celebration! Ricky Stenhouse Jr. in the Kroger/Cottonette Chevrolet Camaro won the 2023 Daytona 500 in double overtime

Chevrolet of Spring Valley is proud to announce that Ricky Stenhouse Jr. in the Kroger/Cottonelle Chevrolet Camaro won the 2023 Daytona 500 in double overtime in was the longest race in Daytona 500 history. Stenhouse’s win for JTG Daugherty Racing was just the third of his NASCAR career. His previous wins include Talladega in 2017 and the Coke Zero 400, of the same year at Daytona.

JTG is the first single-car team to win the Daytona 500 since 2011 when Trevor Bayne won for Wood Brothers Racing. This is also the first-ever win by an African-American owner, as JRG is owned by former NBA player Brad Daugherty along with Tad and Jodi Geschickter.

Yellows Extend Race

Daytona 500 Logo - The Great American RaceStemming from a recent ruling to avoid the race being concluded under a yellow flag, the race went into double overtime due to multiple yellow flags towards the end of the race. The danger of cars coming out transitioning from yellow to green toward the end of the race was apparent as immediate jockeying for position with all the cars close together created a series of multiple pileups at the end of the race. The double overtime extended the race to 530 miles and also propelled Stenhouse from further back in the pack to a leading position, and eventually the lead as the accidents collected vehicles that had been leading for much of the race.  Stenhouse, later stated that a mistake he made in pit row may ironically have won him in the race as without it, his position would have been in the middle of the next pileup. As it was, he was further back in the grouping to miss the mess and able to take the lead position.

Taking second in the race was Joey Logano driving a Ford for Penske who had been a contender for much of the race. “Second is the worst, man,” Logano said. “Congratulations to Ricky. There’s nothing like winning the Daytona 500. That’s why it stings so much finishing second.”

Christopher Bell took third in his Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing, marking 1-2-3 positions for all three manufacturers in the series. In 5th place was Alex Bowman of Hendrick Motorsports in a Chevrolet who took the poll in qualifying. This marked the first time the Daytona 500 pole sitter has finished in the top five since Bill Elliott in 2001.
