A pickup truck has certain tasks, including hauling, towing, and transporting occupants. Work or play, a pickup truck needs to have the power to do all these things.

SlashGear found this out when it had the chance to work with a 2025 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD 4WD LTZ Crew Cab pickup truck with the Trail Boss package. It was equipped with the 6.6-liter Duramax turbocharged V8 diesel engine. Aside from the trim level, the driveline and cab are the most popular configuration that is bought or leased in Minnesota.

The Duramax puts down some serious numbers. With 470 horsepower on tap, the turbodiesel drops 975 pound-feet of torque at a healthy 1,600 rpm. Equipped with the Duramax engine, the Silverado 2500HD hauls around 3,500 pounds of payload in the standard wheelbase. Using a conventional towing set-up, it can trailer up to 20,000 pounds when properly configured. That maximum tow number increases to 22,430 pounds using a fifth-wheel/gooseneck connection.

These numbers alone are why SlashGear stated to simply “go for the turbo-diesel.” The reasons are simple. Pulling power alone will help you accomplish the things you want to do. Whether it is farm work or heading to the lake and dropping your boat into the water next spring, the low-end torque of the Duramax will make a world of difference. It does so confidently. SlashGear also found a “sense of urgency” when it came to putting down the low-end power. Even under towing, acceleration and maintained power will help ease your load and make the task easier—another good point for choosing the Duramax turbodiesel.

Another point made by SlashGear centered on the Crew Cab cabin. While most pickup trucks seem to have lost basic physical controls, the Silverado 2500HD still has them. They are easy-to-use and good-to-the-touch—something we fully appreciate every time we get behind the wheel. SlashGear also praised the 13.4-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system. It is a hub for everything, from key settings for your pickup truck to connected services and audio playback. Even if you are not tethering a smartphone, the Google built-in feature only requires your Google account to use. When you’re logged in, it will have all of your favorites from Google Maps ready to navigate to. You can even bring in your favorite music from Google Play. Also importantly, you have space for five-to-six people, depending on the seat configuration. There is comfortable, ample rear seat legroom and headroom for three adults for those long trips into Rochester or The Cities. Plus, the driver has a comfortable seat that cuts fatigue and enables command of the road—or, off of it.
