What Kind of Car is in the Barbie Movie?

Those who have seen the Barbie movie have likely admired the pink convertible Barbie is seen driving. Even those who haven’t seen the movie but who have seen the trailer have likely noticed the stunning sports car. But what kind of car is it?

You may have thought that it was simply a made up car just for the movie, and that isn’t quite correct. The convertible sports car is, in fact, a real make and model, even if the bright pink color may cause some to think otherwise. After all, Barbie is well known for her pink Dream Cars, but this car is much more than just a toy.

The car seen in the Barbie film is a pink Chevy Corvette from either the 1956 or 1957 model years. That said, it isn’t without modifications. Car enthusiasts can be forgiven if they assumed that this was nothing more than a made up vehicle because if you look closely, it’s actually an electric vehicle.

Of course, there was no electric Corvette back in the 1950s, but the one in the Barbie movie appears to have been modified to allow for electric mobility. If you look closely, you may see the charging post door in the front fender scoop.

Can You Buy an Electric Chevy Corvette?

Though past generations of the iconic Corvette have never been electric models, the technology for electric mobility has certainly developed enough that it’s worth asking whether an electric Corvette is currently available for sale. That answer is… kind of… and almost.

An electrically powered Corvette is almost available in the sense that Chevy is releasing the Corvette E-Ray in the near future. This all-new model isn’t a purely electric car, but it is hybrid electric. It is expected to offer at least 600 horsepower and 500 lb-ft of torque with a 0-60 mph time in under 3 seconds. It should be releasing late this year for the 2024 model year.

That said, Chevy has also come out with something called the e-Crate. The e-Crate is the first Chevy Performance battery and motor combination system. Now, the e-Crate isn’t a car itself, but it is instead a conversion kit that allows those who work on models, such as classic Corvettes, to convert the vehicle from a gasoline powered model to an electric model.

The e-Crate is available in limited quantities, but if you manage to get your hands on one you may be able to enjoy up to 200 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque. The kit is street legal and is compatible with a GM 4-speed automatic transmission.

It would be great if Chevy were to someday release a Barbie version of the classic Chevy Corvette, but if you don’t want to wait in hopes of that day you can always build one yourself using the e-Crate. To learn more or check on its availability, contact us at Chevy of Spring Valley.
